CMS Co-Curricular Activities

Central Middle School co-curricular activities are meant to be a chance for students to improve skills, learn teamwork and sportsmanship, express themselves and find outlets other than academic ones for their energy and enthusiasm. Each activity has one or more advisors who have training and expertise both in the specific activity and in working with adolescent children. While some of the activities involve competition, we do not make winning a priority. Instead, we believe that practicing with enthusiasm and competing against others helps students develop athletically and intellectually.

Using the tabs below, discover the activities and sports we offer. Be aware that the list is not meant to be all inclusive. We may or may not offer an activity each year based on the number of students interested. We may also offer more activities than are currently listed. For a more detailed explanation of the activity, either select the link from the activities name or use the navigation bar on the right to select it.

Chess Club

Our Chess Club is open to students in grades six through eight and beginners as well as experts are welcome to play. The Chess Club hosts friendly and serious competition at Hartford Union High School from January through March. Play concludes with a tournament. There is no fee for this activity.

All of our interscholastic sports programs are run by parent/club organizations. To be a part of that program, please contact Mr. Haldemann at Central Middle School.

The purpose of our Interscholastic Sports program is to provide an opportunity for students to develop their athletic ability and learn sportsmanship in a competitive atmosphere. Student athletes are expected to exhibit exemplary behavior, attend all practices and create a positive image for Central Middle School both during the school day and at athletic contests.

Girls' volleyball, girls' and boys' basketball, and wrestling are offered to students in 6-8th grades. Each team is limited to a maximum of twenty players. The season consists of ten to twelve games.

Intramural sports are offered to students at Central Middle School as a way to provide a meaningful athletic experience to all students. Each program consists of limited instruction followed by game competition between Central students. The games are self-refereed and are meant to give players a chance to have fun and learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen sport. There is a fee charged for each sport’s season. In order to participate, students must meet Central Middle School behavioral expectations.

Sixth through Eighth Grade Girls’ Basketball

Participation in seventh and eighth grade girls’ intramural basketball is not limited in number. The season runs from early September to mid-October and consists of one or two days of instruction and then eight or nine days of competition between teams of girls from CMS.
