Homophones!

Do you know what a homophone is? Third graders at Hartford Jt. 1 - Lincoln School do! Students in Mrs. Cooper's and Mrs. Olejnik's class learned that homophones are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. They worked on reading out loud fluently and with expression while putting on a "Reader's Theater" production to other classes. Everyone had fun learning many different homophones!

Projects included everything from hands – on demonstrations with pulley systems to displays of animals and plants, human anatomy/physiology and techniques of modeling the theory of plate tectonics.  The science fair combined learning, family engagement and a tangible connection to the scientific community.

The crowd and students were engaged, and the excitement lasted the entire evening.  We could not be more proud of our students for their creativity, enthusiasm and innovation.  The event could not have come together without the district faculty, parents and community members.  In all, 21 awards were given to 31 students

Wisconsin Mystery City Picture
Wisconsin Mystery City

The students in Hartford Jt.1, Lincoln School, found out this week that their Wisconsin Mystery City was Mineral Point.  The students spent about two hours after school going through the twenty-five clues that were sent.  They learned so much about Mineral Point's history.  Their early immigrants came from Cornwall, England and settled there in the 1800's.  Long ago zinc and lead were mined there.  Mineral Point is part of the driftless area which is a region of Wisconsin that was untouched by the glaciers.

We also learned that they are located near the Wisconsin River and a human-made lake called Ludden Lake which is named after Allen Ludden, Betty White's late husband.  They are located near our very first capital which was in Belmont and they are about fifty miles from Madison.  Shake Rag Alley is located there and they are the third oldest town in Wisconsin.

These were just a few of the things we learned.  The kids really enjoyed solving the clues.  They had to unscramble words, work puzzles, watch DVD's, figure longitude and latitude, and plot clues out on a map.  They also received letters from some of the students and a class picture.

The students all received a cup, a spoonful of wheat berries, a square of toilet paper, and instruction on how much water to spray in their cups.  (The toilet paper was placed on top of the wheat berries and sprayed with water to hold the moisture the first day.  The toilet paper was removed the second day.)

Students then took turns spraying their seed cups twice a day, for one week.  You will be amazed to see how much their grass grew in such a short amount of time!

In March, the School District of Hartford Joint #1 - Lincoln School was lucky enough to have both Dr. Pattie Liethen and Dr. Nicholas Brahm visit our 4th and 5th graders.  Both doctors practice at the Aurora Clinic in Hartford and spoke to the students about growing up.  The students watched a short video and then the doctors talked with them about physical and emotional changes that they have or will be experiencing.  The discussion ended with a question-answer session.  The students were very attentive, interested and had many great questions.  We are thankful that Dr. Brahm and Dr. Liethen were able to take time out of their busy lives and help educate our students!  Both doctors did a fantastic job relating to our students and answering their questions.  The week following the presentation the students attended a follow-up session with Mr. Jansky, Mrs. Leoni or Mrs. Ellis-Stigler.  During this class, we reiterated what the doctors talked about and answered any new questions the students had regarding growing up.

Poet visits Lincoln picture
Our own Dean of Students is a Published Poet!

The third grade students at Hartford Jt. 1-Lincoln Elementary School, had a published poet come for a visit.  The exciting part for the kids, was that the published poet was their very own Dean of Students, Mr. Neil Hanlon!

Mr. Hanlon discussed earlier influences that paved the way to getting his poetry published, such as a phone call from Nan Witcomb, a famous Australian poet.  He also shared humorous stories about how his friend Scott, helped boost his book sales.  Both of them get mentioned in every book.

Mr. Hanlon emphasized the importance of revising and editing any written work.   He also shared a sample rejection letter and encouraged the kids to write for themselves; not others.  If they write for the joy it brings them, they won’t get discouraged by others or give up.  If they keep writing, they will continue to get better and better.  Mr. Hanlon will even write encouraging notes to himself, inside the covers of his books, to keep him going.

The students were encouraged to write whatever they think and feel.  Mr. Hanlon told them, “Inspiration can come from anywhere!”  He would often write whenever and wherever he was.   To prove this, he showed the students an ATM receipt he once wrote down a thought on.

The third graders were truly inspired and enjoyed hearing more of his poetry, as he let the third grade teachers borrow a book entitled mUSe.   It was especially fun to see the dedication page, which included his wife’s name, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary.  He left the kids with one final thought...make time to read every night!

The students in fourth grade in Hartford Jt. #1 - Lincoln School have been working on a state wide Mystery City project.  Their task for the project was to create unique clues that would tell about the city of Hartford, without mentioning the name.  They needed to make twenty-five clues about our city which provided them with challenges in creativity, logic, brainstorming, research, and organization.  To prepare for their project they made a list of businesses, parks, centers, museums, and some of the other places they liked about the city of Hartford.  They learned a lot about the history of our city and had fun making math problems, puzzles, models, and other creative clues.

Once we have completed our clues, we will mail our box off to our partner city, which is somewhere in Wisconsin.  They will send us their Mystery Box of clues and we will work as a team to solve them!  Solving their box will require library research, Internet research, phone calls, higher-level thinking and cooperation.  This will hone our skills in many areas and we will learn a lot about a city in Wisconsin as we solve their clues.

The first grade classrooms at Lincoln Elementary School - School District of Hartford, learned about community helpers during the first quarter in social studies.  As a culminating activity, students were asked to make a model of a community helper and work place.  Students made their models from toys, legos, and even shoe boxes!  Students presented their models to the class and then were able to display them at the main entrance of the school for all to see.  Great work everyone!!

Lincoln Veteran's Day Celebration

On Thursday, November 10, the third grade students at the School District of Hartford's - Lincoln Elementary School honored our Veterans at the Lion Eyes Assembly.  The character trait they introduced for the month was Citizenship.  The district secretary, Sue Milner, helped honor the veterans by creating a slide show featuring military family members of the third grade students and staff.  After the slide show, the third graders performed the song, "Thank You, Soldiers".  The veterans were then asked to come forward to be applauded and recognized for their service to our country.  In closing, each veteran received a star card, made by the students, as a reminder of how much their service is appreciated.  It was a special day for everyone!

"Daily 5" Reading

First grade students at the in Mrs. Haima's class @ are using the Daily 5 to help them become better readers.  The Daily 5 (the 5 most important literacy tasks to do every day) are:  read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work/spelling, and work on writing.  These students looped together from kindergarten where they first learned about building their reading stamina (building the amount of time they can stay focused, on task, and reading good-fit books).  We graphed our progress every day until we met our goal.  When the students began building reading stamina as kindergarteners in January of this year, our first day began with 30 seconds on-task reading and increased up to 10 minutes.  Now in November as first graders, they can read up to 25 minutes independently!

Pictured are some of the students during "read to someone".  It doesn't matter where you read or who you read with, as long as there is good reading going on!

During our soccer unit (4-5) and kicking/punting unit (K-2), we were lucky to have the varsity soccer coach from Arrowhead High School, Coach Jeff Staus, come in to teacher a soccer lesson to our students.  Mr. Staus is also a physical education and health teacher at Hartford Union High School and has two children here at Lincoln School.  The students had a great time working on their skills and learning from a 'guest' teacher.  Upon conclusion of the lesson, a 'pop' verbal quiz was given to see who remembered the most from the lesson.  Arrowhead soccer shirts and gift certificates were awarded to a few lucky students for paying attention and working hard.  Mr. Staus incorporates character traits into his soccer program as he did throughout the soccer lesson.  Thank you Coach Staus for taking time out of your busy day to come and share your expertise with our students at Lincoln School.

Fall Fun Run Picture
Fall Fun Run

On Saturday, Oct. 22, approximately 50 Lincoln students and their families came together to participate in our Lincoln School Fall Fun Run.  Luckily, the weather cooperated while students and adults both enjoyed fellowship, family and fitness.  Upon completion of a 1/2 or one-mile course outside, participants received a granola bar, 100% juice box or water bottle, compliments of the Lincoln School PTO.  The PTO collected cans for the Hartford Food Pantry the week prior to the race and on the race day.  Anyone who brought in cans for the Hartford Food Pantry also received raffle tickets for a drawing with prizes donated by Creative License of Hartford.  If you were unable to attend the fun run, watch for another run coming later in the school year.  Lincoln School received a $250 grant from the Movin' and Munchin' program as a result of last years Santa Fun Run.  We are hoping to qualify once again for this grant based on the number of students and families that participated in our run.  Thanks to all that came and lead by example the importance of a healthy lifestyle for your children!

The 4th graders at Lincoln School enjoyed their first Art Aware program this week.  Joyce Kautz, a retired school teacher, visited our classroom to present our monthly artist.  Mrs. Kautz represents the West Bend Art Museum.  This month the students learned about Archibald Willard, who is the artist that painted the very famous, "Spirit of 1776".  Mrs. Kautz and her friend, came dressed like those in the picture and they played the snare drum and the piccolo just like they would have done during that time period.  The students really enjoyed the program.
