CMS Co-Curricular Activities

Central Middle School co-curricular activities are meant to be a chance for students to improve skills, learn teamwork and sportsmanship, express themselves and find outlets other than academic ones for their energy and enthusiasm. Each activity has one or more advisors who have training and expertise both in the specific activity and in working with adolescent children. While some of the activities involve competition, we do not make winning a priority. Instead, we believe that practicing with enthusiasm and competing against others helps students develop athletically and intellectually.

Below, find a list of activities and sports we offer.  Be aware that the list is not meant to be all inclusive.  We may or may not offer an activity each year based on the number of students interested.  We may also offer more activities than are currently listed.  For a more detailed explanation of the activity, either select the link from the activities name or use the navigation bar on the right to select it.

Activities
Chess Club
Our Chess Club is open to students in grades six through eight and beginners as well as experts are welcome to play. The Chess Club hosts friendly and serious competition at Hartford Union High School from January through March. Play concludes with a tournament. There is no fee for this activity.

Forensics
Forensics is open to students in grades six through eight. Students must maintain academic and behavioral eligibility, and pay a fee to take part in this program. Forensics is for students who enjoy acting or public speaking and wish to improve their oral presentation skills. Competitors choose from several individual or group categories (some memorized and some not), learn how to interpret or present information and then compete at several contests, some after school and some on Saturdays, from January through February. Participants attend coaching and practice sessions after school. Each year several students qualify for and compete at the Wisconsin State Forensics Tournament in March.

Musical Production
Central’s musical production is one of the most popular activities. Students enrolled in the school chorus program provide the cast and crew of this activity. Auditions are held to cast the major roles in the production and all other students who wish to participate also appear in the musical in some way. Students who do not wish to perform can find a role on the stage, lighting, sound and set crews. The musical alternates between spring and fall productions. Participants must maintain academic and behavioral eligibility, attend lots of rehearsals and be prepare for the time of their lives!

Wisconsin Math League
Each March, all students are involved to compete in the Wisconsin Math League contest. Students who choose to participate take a math assessment during the day, scores are submitted to the national organization and winners receive local, regional and state recognition. Each year for the past several years, Central has at least one student recognized at the state level!

Student Council
The Central Middle Student Council is made up of members from each grade level. Prospective members fill out application forms, write an essay and obtain signatures from references. Members are chosen from those applications based on completeness, essay qualities and the references they obtain. Student Council members plan school activities, competitions, participate in community service projects, work on fundraisers and attend leadership training seminars. Members must maintain academic and behavioral eligibility, pay a fee and be able to attend meetings during and after school. Student Council is a great place to learn how to work in a group, plan activities and become a leader!

Interscholastic Sports
Several interscholastic sports are offered to students at Central Middle School. Students who wish to participate and are chosen for each team must maintain academic and behavioral eligibility, pay a fee, have a physical and meet the individual coach’s expectations.

The purpose of our Interscholastic Sports program is to provide an opportunity for students to develop their athletic ability and learn sportsmanship in a competitive atmosphere. Student athletes are expected to exhibit exemplary behavior, attend all practices and create a positive image for Central Middle School both during the school day and at athletic contests.
